I am not quite sure why the nation has a soft spot for gnomes. They have been in gardens for as long as I can remember. But in the last few years they have crept into Christmas too.

Gnomes or gonks, whatever you like to call them seem to be here to stay. Unlike the garden variety (which just look like little gardeners or fishermen), the Christmas gonk seems to stem from a Scandinavian background. They are seen as cute with their long beards, and personally I think they are much better looking than the Scandinavian trolls. I suppose they are akin to the traditional look of Farther Christmas, perhaps that is why their popularity has increased as Christmas decoration.
