Watching ‘The Thing From Another World’ before watching this has been a eye-opener. It’s great to see what Carpenter integrated into this film as he blew right on by it and set the high watermark.

Tonight’s flicks are a couple of true classics, both starring Vincent Price, the original versions of The House On Haunted Hill and The Last Man On Earth, the latter being the first screen adaptation of I Am Legend, later followed by The Omega Man and then I Am Legend (the one with Will Smith). And Haunted Hill was also remade in 1999 by Dark Castle, which started off doing remakes of William Castle’s movies before branching out to originals.

I don’t want it to sound as though I hated it, this is certainly a much better than average 50s science fiction movie but I have to admit it’s sort of lost on me. It felt like it lacked any punch and immediacy throughout most of the runtime. I wonder if without John Carpenter’s superior (not up for debate) remake if it would be discussed as much. I’m not big on 50s scifi, in fact I’m salty it supplanted the monster movies of the 30s and 40s so I doubt I’d have watched this without feeling obligated to for being such a fan of The Thing.

21. DeadTectives (2018)
Fake ghost hunters accidentally end up in a deadly real haunted house in this horror comedy.
I didn’t intentionally play this back to back with last night’s similarly plotted movie. This was much better had me laughing a bunch. Special effects were fun too. I really recommend this.

There are stories which blend genres and I get the impression they do so because they don’t have much to offer in either category, in other words it’s a gimmick. I didn’t get that feeling here. It isn’t the deepest mystery but it’s a fair shake better than most I’ve seen and probably better than any cross-genre work.

20. Elevator Game (2023)
Based on a Japanese internet urban legend about a combination that unlocks a gateway to another world. Some paranormal investigators who need a quick buck look into it only for it to be more real than they expected.
This is okay, it follows the legend pretty closely (to a point), the monster is creepy. It’s pretty much an adult Are You Afraid of the Dark/Goosebumps, with about the same acting quality.

Well now this was a surprisingly good treat! If you ever wanted to watch a movie about plastic surgery, self mutilation, hemophobia, dick-capitation, and the one of the wettest cunnilinctus scenes most people have ever seen, obviously… I’ve seen worse. 19. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966)
A cowardly typesetter spends the night in a haunted house. His report lights a fire in his small town and makes him a hero.
I was expecting something more Scooby Doo with this, what I got was a little more Scooby Doo ending. All the silly super natural things are probably less than ten minutes of the film, I was expecting Don Knott’s being freaked out by ghosts instead I got small town drama. I did enjoy it though and the soundtrack was fun.

This movie is great if you can get over the disappointment of the VHS cover promising some chrome gauntlet wearing badass terminator from hell only to substitute it with one of those 80s remote control toys with a cupholder and cassette deck. Still a blast. Cameos by Mary Woronov and Gerrit Graham FTW!

A space captain answers a distress signal to a planet doing science experiments trying to beat a virus, but instead have grown some weird mutant.
I put this on for two reasons, 1. look at that poster how can I say no?! 2. Bryan Cranston is in this. Don’t fall for this, it’s a foggy smoky mess of an Alien knockoff. The puppets of the monster look vaguely okay but theyre so embarrassed that they hide it behind haze for the majority of the movie leaving the characters just shooting guns at nothing. Pass on this.
